People Are Still Talking About 'Fantastic Fungi' 5 Years Later

Can you believe it’s been five years since the Fantastic Fungi film debuted? Since then, our community has grown like, well, the mycelial network, connecting people far and wide through a shared curiosity for nature’s intelligence. The magic and mystery of mushrooms never cease to amaze us — and you. Both newcomers and seasoned mycophiles have found a place to come together, with nature as our common ground.

Now more than ever, we see that the themes and lessons in the movie matter to our community and have the potential to truly change the world. Since 2019, we’ve become a trusted voice and leading source on mushrooms and the mycelial network. Our mission is to inspire you to bring the lessons of nature – our greatest teacher – into your everyday life.

Today, we’re looking back at the last four years, sharing some of the most touching and humbling things people have said about the film.

“Fantastic Fungi was nothing short of amazing and educational for all those that watched it. The visuals were simply stunning and they gave the audience a little lesson on biology and nature as well. They provided multiple time lapses of fungi increasing in size over time and included their functions, as well as how some have advanced science in multiple different ways. They even explore how fungi in the wild play such an important role in the growth of an ecosystem. I absolutely loved this documentary and hope that all those that watch it after me also love it as much as I did!” —  Julian Millet, in a five-star Google review

“One of the most positive and hopeful documentaries in years, this lean, beautiful, entertaining mushroom movie suggests that the answers to many of our problems could grow naturally and abundantly….With beautiful time-lapse cinematography, compelling interviews with mycologist Paul Stamets, and poetic narration by Brie Larson, it's one of the most entertaining and inspiring documentaries in some time. … Offers just enough information/ideas to get viewers interested into looking further into mushrooms, without trying to make any demands or convert anyone. … Provides hope for all kinds of world problems, including mushrooms helping to cure diseases and helping people feel more connected.” — Common Sense Media

“An outstanding spore-gasm of a documentary about the enchanting and mysterious world of fungi and the phenomenal power it has to perpetuate life and rebirth from death and decay. Love the stoned ape hypothesis - magic!” — IMDB reviewer Xstal

“Louie Schwartzberg's documentary is a dreamy, informative, and hopeful dive into the world of mushrooms and fungi.” — Rotten Tomatoes

“Louie Schwartzberg’s lightly informative, delightfully kooky documentary, “Fantastic Fungi,” offers nothing less than a model for planetary survival.” — New York Times

“... “Fantastic Fungi” is so entertaining, informative and appealingly hopeful about the hard-working cure-all for our ailing world lying beneath our feet.” — Los Angeles Times

“Its illustration of fungi’s resilience is dazzling on both a visual and intellectual level, while affirming with matter-of-fact clarity that we, as a species, must evolve with nature in order to prevent our own extinction.” — RogerEbert.com

How would you describe the film to someone who’s never seen it? While the reviews in media outlets and on social networks certainly help spread the word about the film — even now — the opinions of our community are especially important to us. Thank you for being part of the community and allowing us to further our mission.
